Surah Ali-Imran (The Family of Imran: surah 3 • 200 ayahs) TRANSLITERATION & TRANSLATION

Surah Ali-Imran(The Family of Imran:)
(Surah 3 • 200 ayahs)

Imran in Islam is regarded as the father of Mary. This chapter is named after the family Imran (Amram), which includes Imran, Saint Anne, Mary, andJesus. The chapter is believed to have been revealed in Medina and is either the second or third of the Medinan suras. Almost all of it also belongs to the third year of the Hijra with the possible exception of verse 61, which mentions Mubāhalah and therefore might have been revealed during the visit of the Najrān Christian deputation which was occurred in the 10th year of the Hijrah. This chapter primarily focuses on the departure of prophethood from the Mosaic dispensation. Another speculation[by whom?] is that since the event of Mobahela is the highlight of this surah, Al Imran could very well refer to the progeny of Abu Talib ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, whose real name was Imran.

Or ‘ambiguous.’

There was certainly a sign for you in the two hosts that met: one host fighting in the way of Allah and the other faithless, who saw them visibly twice as many.1 Allah strengthens with His help whomever He wishes. There is indeed a moral in that for those who have insight.

Or ‘whom they [i.e. the faithful] saw visibly twice as many.’

When Allah said, ‘O Jesus, I shall take you[r soul],1 and I shall raise you up toward Myself, and I shall clear you of [the calumnies of] the faithless, and I shall set those who follow you above the faithless until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me will be your return, whereat I will judge between you concerning that about which you used to differ.

Tawaffā means ‘to exact fully’ something, ‘to receive in full,’ ‘to take one’s full share,’ and in the present Qurʾānic context it is used in the sense of taking away of the soul, either temporarily, as during sleep (as in 6:60), or permanently, as at the time of death (as in 3:193; 4:97;6:61; 7:37, 126; 8:50; 10:46; 12:101; 13:40; 16:28; 22:5; 32:11; 40:67, 77; 47:27). In verse 39:42, it is used to refer to the taking of the soul both during sleep and death: ‘It is Allah who takes (yatawaffā) the souls at death, and those that have not died during their sleep. He retains those for whom He has decreed death, but releases the rest for a specified term.’ The passive form of the verb, tuwuffiya means ‘to die,’ ‘to expire,’ and to ‘pass away.’ It occurs in 2:234, 240. In a tradition, Imam ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā (ʿa) explains that Jesus Christ (ʿa) “was raised alive from the earth to the heaven. Then his soul was taken away between the earth and the heaven. After he was raised to the heaven his soul was restored to his body, and hence the words of God, the Almighty and the Glorious, ‘When Allah said: ‘O Jesus, I shall take you[r soul], and I shall raise you up to Myself…’ ” (ʿUyūn akhbār al-Riḍā, Tehran: Intishārāt-e Jahān, n.d., ed. Sayyid Mahdī al-Ḥusaynī al-Lājwardī, vol. 1, p. 215; cf. Biḥār al-anwār, vol. 14, p. 338).

This is in accordance with 2:76 where the Jews are described as making a similar statement. Alternatively, it may be understood as being part of the reply the Prophet is asked to give to the Jews, in which case the translation will be as follows: ‘Say, “Indeed [true] guidance is the guidance of Allah, so that anyone may be given the like of what you were given, or that he may argue with you before your Lord.” ’

Quintal: hundredweight. The American Heritage Dictionary gives the following history of the English ‘quintal’: Middle English, a unit of weight, from Old French, from Medieval Latin quintāle, from Arabic qinṭār, from Late Greek kentēnarion, from Late Latin centēnārium (pondus), hundred(weight), from Latin centēnārius, of a hundred.

TRANSLITERATION:

fa-stajāba lahum rabbuhum ʾannī lā ʾuḍīʿu ʿamala ʾāmilin minkum min dhakarin ʾaw ʾunthā baʿḍukum min baʿḍin fa-lladhīna hājarū wa-ʾukhrijū min diyārihim wa-ʾūdhū fī sabīlī wa-qātalū wa-qutilū la-ʾukaffiranna ʿanhum sayyiʾātihim wa-la-ʾudkhilannahum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru thawāban min ʿindi llāhi wa-llāhu ʿindahū ḥusnu th-thawābi

TRANSLATION:

Then their Lord answered them, ‘I do not waste the work of any worker among you, whether male or female; you are all on the same footing. So those who migrated and were expelled from their homes, and were tormented in My way, and those who fought and were killed —I will surely absolve them of their misdeeds and I will admit them into gardens with streams running in them, as a reward from Allah, and Allah—with Him is the best of rewards.’

lā yaghurrannaka taqallubu lladhīna kafarū fī l-bilādi

TRANSLATION:

Never be misled by the bustle of the faithless in the towns.

TRANSLITERATION:

TRANSLATION:

It is a trivial enjoyment; then their refuge is hell, and it is an evil resting place.

TRANSLITERATION:

lākini lladhīna ttaqaw rabbahum lahum jannātun tajrī min taḥtihā l-ʾanhāru khālidīna fīhā nuzulan min ʿindi llāhi wa-mā ʿinda llāhi khayrun li-l-ʾabrāri

TRANSLATION:

But those who are wary of their Lord —for them shall be gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], a hospitality from Allah; and what is with Allah is better for the pious.

TRANSLITERATION:

wa-ʾinna min ʾahli l-kitābi la-man yuʾminu bi-llāhi wa-mā ʾunzila ʾilaykum wa-mā ʾunzila ʾilayhim khāshiʿīna li-llāhi lā yashtarūna bi-ʾāyāti llāhi thamanan qalīlan ʾulāʾika lahum ʾajruhum ʿinda rabbihim ʾinna llāha sarīʿu l-ḥisābi

TRANSLATION:

Indeed among the People of the Book there are surely some who have faith in Allah, and in what has been sent down to you, and in what has been sent down to them. Humble toward Allah, they do not sell the signs of Allah for a paltry gain. They shall have their reward near their Lord; indeed Allah is swift at reckoning.
